How to create a Kanban Board

Why should I care?

Visualizing work in a Kanban Board helps teams communicate and collaborate.

What is a Kanban Board?

A Kanban Board visualizes a team’s tasks and workflow.

To accomplish great things we must first dream, then visualize, then plan... believe... act!

How to create a kanban board

1

Create a board

Either use software or a physical board

2

Develop a workflow

Create stages to map to your team’s workflow

3

Populate the board with cards

Develop cards based on the requirements of your project

4

Limit work-in-progress

For each stage, provide an optional limit on the number of simultaneous cards a person can work on

5

Move cards

From left to right, move cards as they pass through stages in your workflow

What to watch out for

  • Creating too many Kanban Boards for a team
  • Infrequently updating the Kanban Board
  • Not making the Kanban Board transparent to the whole team
